When you start a record label you're not just responsible for it's success, but also for the success and promotion of the bands that have been signed. Although deadlines, late nights and stress, take on a life of their own, people are successful and 5 Star Productions is no exception.

Located in Saskatoon, 5 Star Productions was created by Miles P. Yohnke on June 1st 1998, and has been growing ever since. Local musician Rob Palacol was the first artist signed to 5 Star. Since then Yohnke has upped the roster to include local boys, the Wheat Monkeys, and Trinidad recording artist Garland Headley.

Running the label out of Saskatoon has created some problems for Yohnke. In its current location, 5 Star is the exact opposite to every other major label in the industry. Audiences at shows are smaller, good distribution is harder to achieve, and it's more difficult to gain nationwide interest. But with the help of the Prairie Music Alliance, 5 Star is trying to create an awareness of the talent in Saskatchewan.

So now we understand running a label is hard, but with the crap comes the kickass. Palacol first released on 5 Star, "Descriptive", was nominated pop recording of the year and album design of the year at the Prairie Music Awards. Headley's "Dimensions of Faith" was finished May 30 this year, the Wheat Monkey's EP was release on June 15 2000 and Palacol's second release, "Yesterday's Gone" was released July 8.

Where does Yohnke plan on taking 5 Star Productions now? Throught the success of 5 Star Productions, Yohnke has created Inner Ear Studios with Palacol (who oversees the entire recording). With the creation of Inner Ear Studios, 5 Star can provide artistic control to their artists from the initial concept to the completion including the photography, graphic design, distribution, and all the elements involved in the recording process. Yohnke is also in negotiations with a major label distribution firm to license 5 Star Productions meaning more exposure for the label and their respective artists and better distribution within Canada and United States.
